Digging Season

by Christopher Hivner

The world spun under me,

the bones of others

past and further past

moaned in song

trying to tell me a secret.

Tell me a lie or a tale,

prevaricate or equivocate,

but don’t tell me your secrets.

Pile the dirt high

to cover your sins,

hide each black mark

with the verve

of a king holding court.

Don’t tell me your secrets,

or I’ll have

to tell you mine.
