HEADS

by John Grey

Your brain's in there somewhere.
No longer filtering information
and sensations of course.
A penny for your thoughts?
I'm afraid you'd be overcharging me.

I keep you at my bedside.
Like returning to the scene of your crime really.
As for my ex, Anita,
she's just as beautiful as ever.
A permanent state of shock
suits her.
She sits atop a counter in the kitchen,
ironically, a place she rarely ventured into.

Formaldehyde has done
a wonderful job
of preparing you for the future.
Your head is like a fine marble sculpture.
And what of that face.
Who would have guessed
that the pop eyes of terror
would long outlive
your infamous smirk.

John Grey is an Australian poet, US resident. Recently published in That, Dalhousie Review, and North Dakota Quarterly with work upcoming in Qwerty, Chronogram, and failbetter.
