the poem as a bouquet of broken glass

by John Sweet

hangs himself on an

ordinary sunlit afternoon for

reasons you don’t need to understand

never heard of frankie b

has no use for jackson

a genocide of one, right?

guaranteed no survivors

color and form, yes, but too much of

one and not enough of the other and so

all stories become stories of the

failures that have shaped

your own life

and all lives end in death,

obviously,

but some of us can’t wait

some of us have other places to be,

have more immediate points to make

and she opens the door to the shed

while thinking about none of this

                       and there he is and

                               there he stays

the end of a sentence, sure,

and the end of a life,

but the punch line will always be the future

those of us who survive will

always have the final say

who you were never matters as

much as who we are

willing to let you become

John Sweet sends greetings from the rural wastelands of upstate NY. He is a firm believer in writing as catharsis, and in the continuous search for an unattainable and constantly evolving absolute truth. His latest poetry collections include Heathen Tongue (2018 Kendra Steiner Editions), and A Flag on Fire Is a Song of Hope (2019 Scars Publications).

Ann Marie Rhiel is the Assistant Art Director for Yellow Mama Webzine. She was born and raised in Bronx, New York, presently living in New Jersey. She reconnected with her passion for art in 2016 and has had her work exhibited in art galleries around northern New Jersey ever since. She is a commissioned painting artist, who also enjoys photography. Her work has also appeared in Black Petals and Megazine Official.
