The Mistress

Jason D. Brawn

“Fancy a drink with me and the girl I’m screwing?” asked Jake, a Jack the lad and office Romeo.

“Sure,” I wanted to meet the fool who’s mad enough to jump into bed with that toe rag.

So we went to a nearby pub, to meet the unlucky one.  It was my first month in my new job and Jake was my colleague. He was loud and brash, but showed a lot of respect for me. We spoke about our life, for the first time. I told him about my wife and how long we’d been married. Six years, it’d been and we were happy. This did, however, wipe the smirk off his face, but he quickly began talking about his mistress. A married woman, in her early forties, unhappily married to a bore, who failed to satisfy her in bed and was unable to grant her the luxuries she’d desired.

“My Sue’s not like that,” I was quick to answer.

“Then, you’re a lucky man,” said Jake.

“How long’s the affair been going on?”

“Nearly a year now,” answered Jake. “Her fella’s supposed to be some kind of travelling salesman. You know, always about in the country, selling knock-off goods.”

“Does he hit her or treat her bad?” I asked.

“Not really. Just a boring man, who can’t keep it up.”

“Do you feel sorry for him?”

“No. Man’s a fool.” Jake had no shame and felt it was for the best.

          “Do you love her?”

Jake thought about this hard. “I don’t know.  But I know I’m not the first.”

“Would kill my Sue, if that was her.” I meant what I said.

“Easier said than done,” contradicted Jake.

          “I mean it.”

“I’m sure you do.” Jake pretended to agree. He finished his pint and asked, “Same again, mate?”

          “Sure,” I replied.

Jake went to the bar to get his round. This made me think. Thinking about how lucky I really was. I promise one thing, when she comes I will leave.  Don’t want to be nowhere near her. Want to go home and meet my beautiful wife, who I dearly love.

          When Jake came back:

“Should be here in a sec.”

“Listen, pal. I’ll go after this,” I promised to myself.

“All right,” Jake was reluctant to say. Then, “Here she is,” he was pleased to announce.

I turned my head and saw my own wife coming towards us.
