FIRST LIGHT

Jeffrey Park

At the first hint of dawn

the children

clatter down the metal steps

to the cellar

excited to see how many

are still alive

and how sticky

or slippery the stone floor

has become.

Jeffrey Park lives in Ebergötzen, Germany, home of the European Bread Museum (really). He teaches English for aspiring scientists at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and occasional writes poetry.
