Lost Without Knowing It

by Richard LeDue

Those of us with no where to go

go to bed before 9 PM,

while the most interesting thing

to happen to us that night

would be to fall sleep

with the lights on.

In the morning,

we forget our dreams

easier each day,

and dress for work,

believing

ourselves awake,

even though

we never looked in a mirror

to fix our hair,

the oatmeal tasted like coffee

and our footprints illegible—

never questioning our sense of direction.
