HOLDING OUT FOR A RAINBOW

by John Grey

It has

been raining for days.

The grass is green and lush

          outside

but here,

in this rank and ratty

second floor apartment,

          the fungi and mold

          sprout.

I sit in a kitchen chair,

elbows on table,

head in hands.

          That is,

          when I bother

          to get out of bed.

The slime is oozing

out through my brain.

And I’m cursed with inward eyes.

John Grey is an Australian poet, U.S. resident, recently published in Sheepshead Review, Poetry Salzburg Review, and Hollins Critic. Bernice Holtzman’s paintings and collages have appeared in shows at various venues in Manhattan, including the Back Fence in Greenwich Village, the Producer’s Club, the Black Door Gallery on W. 26th St., and one other place she can’t remember, but it was in a basement, and she was well received.
