ANGELIC

by John Short

Athens

                   Summer in our cellar

                   you lazed about

                   each sticky afternoon

                   watching television soaps

                   and I’d trawl the market

                   for fruit and vegetables,

                   sling damaged watermelons

                   in the bath, hose them

                   clean of gutter dirt,

                   cut them into red cubes

                   for your pleasure. I recall

you asked if I loved you

                   and what would become

                   of us in another decade

                   then dozed off, drained

                   and I thought how innocent,

                   angelic, but such a devil

                   in the neurotic night

                   when your broken soul

                   would murder any futures.

John Short lives in Liverpool (UK) again after a previous life in southern Europe. He's appeared in about 80 magazines internationally and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2018. He has a pamphlet, Unknown Territory (Black Light Engine Room 2020), and a full collection, Those Ghosts (Beaten Track 2021). His collection, In Search of a Subject (Cerasus Poetry 2023), is available on Amazon or as an e-book from the Cerasus online shop.

Joseph Richkus is an enthusiastic illustrator, photographer, writer, and reader. He has been an essential oil perfumer for more than 20 years, and has worked as a history teacher, chemist, security guard, and circus canvasman. He bemoans the limits of time and regrets that he is not 10 people, one of whom would happily devote every waking hour to reading the Sunday New York Times.
