It
Began with Violence
Donna Dallas
In the beginning
fire
from conception
it began always
with violence
an eruption of hard
core
words
covering like ants
cover a corpse
till it’s so black
it’s the earth
again dirt
and mud and
it begins again
with a fist
a swollen lip
when bitten
it will bite back
harder
and deeper
to draw blood
because it began
this way
The snake
it bit
the holes sunk deep
poison moves
slow
and then later a
fast rage
a loaded gun
the sound rips the
air
ricochets off the
trees that slept lazy
and trusting
beneath the sun
bullets shred their
branches
into splinters
In the beginning there
was violence

Dallas: I studied Creative Writing and Philosophy at NYU’s Gallatin School and
was lucky enough to study under William Packard, founder and editor of the New
York Quarterly. Lately, I am found in Horror Sleaze Trash, Beatnik Cowboy
and The Opiate among many other publications. I published my first novel, Death
Sisters, with Alien Buddha Press. My first chapbook, Smoke & Mirrors, will
launch this fall with New York Quarterly. I currently serve on the editorial
team for Red Fez and New York Quarterly.
