Opening Day

Joseph Danoski

The autumn of his calling, and the mighty

Hunter’s gone;

With his gun to wake the sun,

And a shot to crack the dawn.

Like the early bird with his worm secured,

He’s up and away, opening day,

To shatter the calm.

The great warrior-ascendant,

Sent with the screams,

To shake and awaken the dead

From their dreams.

He’s got a beat up pickup that seats six

To the pack,

And a new bed for the buck

With the seven-point rack.

The midnight moon’s just setting

In the red-eyed dawn;

The stars of the dogs and the sign

Of the fawn.

The city in the distance, its fleshpots

On the breeze;

He knows pigs are just sheep

To the king of the sleaze.

Knows where to stalk wild turkey

And the golden goose;

Elusive girl of his dreams

Still on the loose.

His senses are keen now to the feel

of the steel;

The heart of the hunter on the heat

Of her heel.

With the wolf in his eyes on the whites

Of her tail;

He’s running on instinct down

That mountain trail.

It’s the smell of the powder and the cut

To the chase.

It’s the thrill of the hunt and the look

On her face.

Loaded and ready, hands holding steady,

And Bang! rabbits scatter, his shotgun

Shattering the calm.
