Doing Without

I am without a telephone

because like painting

I need to see faces.

I am without a newspaper

because the paper reports

sickness

and I am well.

I am without a television

because I would rather

live my life

than wish to be like

the actors who would live it

for me.

I am without a car

because

my body need exercise

a great deal more

than the convenience.

And I am with her

because her environment

has broken her brain,

poured it in a saucepan

        and promised her an omelet.

R. Gerry Fabian is a retired English instructor. As a poet and novelist,

he has been publishing his writing since 1972 in various literary magazines. 

He has published four books of his published poems, Parallels, 

Coming Out of the Atlantic, Electronic Forecasts, and Ball on the Mound.

In addition, he has published three novels. They are Getting Lucky (The Story), Memphis Masquerade, and Seventh Sense.
